  • Federer makes U.S. Open final, then rain strikes
Roger Federer beat Novak Djokovic in four sets Saturday to reach the U.S. Open final before rain disrupted play.
  • U.S. Open women's final delayed until Sunday
Serena Williams waited six years to return to the U.S. Open final. What's another day? The title match between two-time champion Williams and first-time Grand Slam finalist Jelena Jankovic was postponed from Saturday until Sunday night because of heavy rain brought by Tropical Storm Hanna. It's the first time since 1974 that the U.S. Open women's championship match was not played on a Saturday.
  • Serena, Jankovic to meet for U.S. Open title
New height for Jelena Jankovic. Familiar scene for Serena Williams. Each won on Friday to reach the U.S. Open final.
  • Bryans win men's doubles title at U.S. Open
Twins Mike and Bob Bryan won their second U.S. Open men's doubles title and sixth Grand Slam championship overall, beating Leander Paes and Lukas Dlouhy 7-6 (5), 7-6 (10) Friday. Doubles partners for more than a dozen years, the 30-year-old brothers won in their 704th career match. The Bryans won the bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics and next head to Spain to help the defending champion United States in the Davis Cup.
  • Black, Paes win U.S. Open mixed doubles title
Cara Black of Zimbabwe and Leander Paes of India won their first U.S. Open mixed doubles title by beating Liezel Huber of the United States and Jamie Murray of Britain 7-6 (6), 6-4 in the final Thursday. Paes has won four Grand Slam mixed doubles titles, and Black has won three - but this was the first for each at Flushing Meadows and the first for them as a team. They were seeded fifth at the U.S. Open. Huber and Murray were unseeded.
  • Defeated Davydenko not upset by upset question
For more than a year, the cloud of a gambling investigation has covered Nikolay Davydenko. So after he lost to a qualifier ranked 130th at the U.S. Open, the question was inevitable. Did he feel a need, Davydenko was asked Tuesday, to explain how in the world Gilles Muller upset him? "I can beat everyone and I can lose to everyone," the fifth-seeded Russian said, without a hint of anger or agitation. "Normally I have a chance to win, but I didn't." "What can I say?" he said.
  • Federer confident of getting back to No. 1
As if trying to remind himself and everyone else where he's been and where he's quite certain he'll return, Roger Federer thrust his right fist overhead and pointed skyward with his index finger. The universal gesture for No. 1. As Federer made that signal, the 1970s song "Still the One" by Orleans rang out through Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sunday, marking the end of the four-time defending champion's 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 victory over 28th-seeded Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic in the U.S.
  • Molik retires after injury-prone career
Australia's Alicia Molik has retired from international tennis after a long run of injuries, including a debilitating inner-ear virus. The 27-year-old Molik peaked at a No. 8 ranking after reaching the Australian Open quarterfinals in 2005, but spent most of the rest of that season off the circuit because she was unable to balance due to the ear virus.
  • Russian Fed Cup team missing its top 3 players
Russia will be missing three top players - injured Maria Sharapova, Elena Dementieva and Dinara Safina - when it faces Spain in the Fed Cup final. They're ranked in the top 10 on the WTA Tour, but were left off the team announced Wednesday for the Sept. 13-14 matches on outdoor clay at Club de Campo in Madrid. Selected for the Russian team were No. 4 Svetlana Kuznetsova, No. 10 Vera Zvonareva, No. 56 Ekaterina Makarova and No. 71 Elena Vesnina.
